Prior to her work with Crystal City, she was the Marketing Director for Akerman Senterfitt Wickwire Gavin, a  Top 100 national law firm and a Senior Marketing & Business Development Supervisor for Reed Smith LLP, a global law firm.

Maurisa serves on the Board for the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce.  She is also a member of Success in the City Professional Women Organization, Ladies Who Launch, Washington Women in Public Relations, and a Social Committee Member for the Virginia Tech Alumni Association (National Capital Region).

Maurisa is a graduate of Virginia Tech University. She resides in Alexandria, VA with her husband and son.

Brendan Hurley is the Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications for Goodwill of Greater Washington where he is responsible for the non-profit agency’s internal and external marketing & communications strategies covering its retail operations, contract services and job training programs.  He has been with Goodwill since October 2003.

Prior to Goodwill Industries, Brendan was the Director of Marketing for Clear Channel Radio in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for managing the regional corporate brand as well as the marketing departments for two of the company’s largest radio stations, WBIG FM and WASH FM. In 2002, Brendan won an Achievement in Radio Award for producing the Expo for the Cure, in support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The same year he was also a recipient of the Clear Channel – Washington Employee of the Year Award.  Since arriving at Goodwill, Brendan has successfully led the effort to rebuild the organization’s brand, generating millions of dollars worth of earned media, and launching the first successful, revenue-generating, social media campaign in Goodwill history.

In November 2005, he was recognized by the Greater Washington Board of Trade for his contributions to the local business community and in January of 2006 Brendan was profiled in PR Week Magazine as one of four non-profit marketing executives in the country successful at “doing more with less.”

Brendan’s successful marketing strategies have been featured on the front pages of The Washington Post and The Washington Times, as well as in The New York Times, Washington Business Journal, PR Week Magazine, Chronicle of Philanthropy, and on CNN, FOX News, NPR and MSNBC, among others.

His social media strategy won three awards from the American Marketing Association and has even been presented as a case study on multiple marketing websites and at universities around the country.

Brendan is the President of the Washington, DC chapter of the American Marketing Association and the immediate past Chair of the Greater Washington Board of Trade’s Marketing & Communications Executive Network.

Brendan earned his MS in Marketing from Johns Hopkins University and a BA in Communications from James Madison University.  He resides in Northern Virginia with his wife Atsuko and their son, Jacob.

Steven Mandzik is a guest on Conversations in Public Relations.

Steven Mandzik is the founder of A Clean Life, a local nonprofit organization that educates people about healthy decisions they can make to improve their lives and the environment.

Steven is a passionate evangelist for healthy food choices, including options such as shopping for produce at farmer’s markets in the Washington, DC area.  What is also interesting about Steven is that he has worked in social media, and is now effectively applying those social media skills to promote his cause, including using Twitter and blogs.  Steven’s work is an example of how nonprofit organizations may use social media to promote causes at the grassroots level.

Steven suggests that consumers look to social media sources and communities in addition to mainstream media for informing choices about their health.  He points out that mainstream media tends to be heavily influenced by studies that are underwritten by special interests.  However, social networking communities have useful wisdom and practical advice to share.

David Ryan is Director of Production Services and a member of the sales and marketing team with the media replication and related multimedia services firm, Video Labs, located in Rockville, MD.

Before joining Video Labs, David was VP/General Manager at GVI, a full-service video production provider catering to the “K Street community” of government, association, corporate and public relations clients.  At GVI, David managed one-third of the company’s accounts, including the largest, which had billings of over $1.2 million over five years.  David was also the Executive Producer for the company’s live television projects including numerous training videoconferences and webcasts for the Head Start Bureau and the Department of Education.

For more than a decade before joining GVI, David was an independent producer and director based in the Washington, DC/Baltimore area.  During that period, he worked with over 150 national and regional clients.  David produced televised and webcast events, from videoconferences for the Defense Department to national conventions for the AFL-CIO, to telethons for the United Negro College Fund.  David also worked in live news with Washington, DC’s NBC station, WRC and ABC’s, Nightline.

David began his television career in public television.  He was Associate Director with the PBS progressive country music series, Austin City Limits.  He was also a staff producer and director with the South Carolina Educational Television Network and later joined KRMA-TV in Denver as Cultural Affairs Producer.  In that position he developed and produced a regional weekly television magazine series covering the arts.  He also produced numerous documentaries and concerts, including the series, In Concert with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, which was nationally aired on PBS.

David received his BA in History/Classics from the College of William and Mary and his MA in Communications from The University of Texas at Austin.

Peter V. Stanton is President and CEO at Stanton Communications, Inc.,  a company he founded in 1989.  He has more than 30 years of public relations experience, including work for companies from entrepreneurial start-ups to Fortune 100 corporations.

In addition, Peter has advised heads of state on communications initiatives. His clients have included the President of the Philippines, the former president of China, Jiang Zemin, the former Chief Executive of Hong Kong, and others. He also coordinated media logistics for three visits to the United States of the Pope (John Paul II – 1987 and 1995; Benedict XVI – 2008).

TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) is a nonprofit organization that headquartered in Washington, DC that provides ongoing emotional help, hope, and healing to all who are grieving the death of a loved one in military service to America, regardless of relationship to the deceased, geography, or circumstance of the death. TAPS meets its mission by providing peer-based support, crisis care, casualty casework assistance, and grief and trauma resources.

Ami Neiberger-Miller is the public affairs officer for TAPS.  Her work with TAPS  includes working with the news media, designing strategic outreach campaigns, advising surviving families on media relations, speaking to organizations about TAPS, conducting online outreach to raise awareness with core audiences, writing press releases and other materials, and forging partnerships that help build support for TAPS and surviving families.

Because she is a surviving family member, Ami brings a unique perspective to her role with TAPS. Ami’s 22-year-old brother, U.S. Army Specialist Christopher Neiberger, was killed in August 2007 by a roadside bomb while serving with the U.S. Army in Baghdad, Iraq. She managed an avalanche of media attention focused on her grieving family and tries to use her personal experience and professional expertise to help others.

Ami has emerged as a leading advocate for surviving families through her work with TAPS and the media. She authored a guide to managing the news media for military families dealing with traumatic situations. She has written for PRSA’s Tactics, been interviewed for the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and spoken at Columbia University on media coverage and trauma survivors. She has been interviewed by CNN, CBS Sunday Morning, the Pentagon Channel, the Voice of America, and many other outlets. She also appears in the HBO documentary “Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery.

As an active member of the TAPS Sibling Support Network, Ami says she finds strength in connecting with others who have experienced the similar loss of a loved one serving in the military.

She devoted more than 12 years of her career to helping organizations improve how they communicate and work with the media. She has worked with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, the Nature Conservancy, the National 4-H Council, the University of Florida, the National Veterans Legal Services Program, and Sister Cities International. She founded Steppingstone LLC in 2003 and works as a consultant. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida and is accredited in public relations.
